I previously had a Devlin biochemistry textbook which was poorly written and not illiustrated well. The pros are Lippincott is that each chapter is around 7-15 pages. It's this succinct nature and brilliantly colored graphs, drawings, helpful tidbits of information that is not extraneous or tedious that makes this textbook a true gem. However one con is that it can be missing in detail. I found that upon reading this textbook, it was extremely clear to understand and the true strength of this textbook is that it'll give a broad picture of major concepts. The diagrams are well drawn. Furthermore at the end of each chapter is a huge blocked diagram which tries to connect all the different ideas and concepts into a visual and interesting review. The problems at the end of each chapter, although not numerous, is very complex and difficult, and what is convenient is that the answer is right next to the questions, unlike other textbooks where you have to go back and forth to the back of the text
This book has a unique way of making biochemistry concepts more understandable. I find the diagrams useful in summarizing the concepts. Also the book has good clinical questions that applies the biochemical concepts.
I wish I'd have learned about this reader-friendly text while in college. It would have saved me hours in unraveling biochem. The text is supported step by step with graphics. And if then one misses understanding some aspect, the chapter is wrapped up succinctly yet solidly in a summary. I bought it now as a quick reference for answering questions my children serve me but cannot definitively respond
This book has a terrible layout and design that is not user friendly. Subjects and topics that should be in the same area are instead scattered throughout the whole book. It does not give in depth facts about different subjects, it only skims over things that need several paragraphs to explain. Just absolutely terrible and not worth the pages it is printed on.
MUST HAVE for ANY biochem student...makes everything easier to understand.
Forget those texts that are written by biochemists who want to SHOW everyone how much they know while the book is not readable...this one is a keeper with great diagrams!
